Unreal Engine 4 Is Free

by March 4, 2015 0 comments

If you’re a game developer and you’ve wanted to toy around with the Unreal Engine, squeal like a little girl because it just got easier. One year ago, Epic Games put in place a subscription program to give their audience the opportunity to explore the potential of the Unreal Engine, for a fee, of course. Now they’ve decided to kick it up a notch by previewing a brand new engine and offering it to the public for free…Damn.

To see what exactly is within the realm of possibility check out the GDC (Game Developers Conference) sizzle reel:

Of course, if you publish a game using the Unreal Engine and it grosses more than a stated amount, Epic Games will take a 5 percent cut. That isn’t asking for much, considering the product that is being made available. It’s great to see the gaming industry move in the direction of innovation over compensation.
This will give smaller companies the chance to actualize a Triple-A experience.

With the way Steam has made indie games more accessible and now Epic providing the tools to build, any person (or team) with a vision and talent can manifest something incredible. This is one direction that propelling gaming to the next level. Games like Shovel Knight showed the market that you don’t need a major developer for quality games. I can’t wait to see what kind of things the public will do with this technology. For more news on gaming and this year’s GDC, keep checking in.
