Sega is no longer making console games.

After Sonic Boom being the worst selling Sonic game to date, Sega has announced that they will no longer be manufacturing console games. Sega Sammy Holdings, the parent company that controls Sega, stated that they were moving to the mobile and online gaming market.

This doesn’t come as a surprise after Sega offered 300 of their staff early retirement. The company said “Local organisations managing packaged game software in Western markets will be streamlined” and already had the San Fransisco office set for closure.

Is this the beginning of the end? We’ve seen the once gaming giant go from console creator to now mobile game company. Or is this the calculated adjustment Sega needs to return to the glory days. I suspect they’re trying to break it big in the Free to Play market; games like Clash of Clans and Candy Crush have been huge hits. It is sad to see the once powerhouse be whittled down to a mobile gaming company, but perhaps it’s for the best. More and more people are resorting to their smartphones to satisfy the gaming itch; maybe Sega is ahead of the curb.
