Mortal Kombat X

When Mortal Kombat hit the scene in 1993 it literally changed gaming forever. Not only because it brought a world where you could rip out a mans heart, but the game was so violent and video games were so young as a medium of entertainment that it force the senate to form the ESRB.
Mortal Kombat was so bone-shatteringly awesome that they had to make new laws to contain it and blood and gore quickly became the trademark of every MK game. Now over 20 years later we're on the heels of the 10th installment in the series but Ed Boon and the team at NetherRealm Studios is trying to make more than a game that a allows you to cut people in half with a buzzsaw hat.

Mortal Kombat 9 blew everyone's mind, it was a series that was almost dead in the water until NetherRealm studios brought the game back to 2D and proved the this game deserves to be respected as one of the Titans of the genre. Since then the company has given us Injustice: Gods Among Us, the amazing DC Universe brawler, showing us that MK 9 wasn't a fluke and that they can craft a beautiful combat experience. So what has the team at NetherRealm done to MK X to prove that this game isn't just about punching genitals while wearing awesome sunglasses, Lets find out
Most of the original roster as well as the classic game modes will be returning. Story mode, 1 vs 1 Ranked, King of the Hill, Survivor and Test Your Luck with a new edition called "Living Towers", this is an Evolution of Mortal Kombat's "Challenge Tower" where the gameplay will change as the player progresses through the tower. These changes vary from daily, to every hour, to random depending on what tower the player is competing in.

The story mode will take off right where the last one ended and span 25 yeas into the future. This will show the character aging and evolving as the game goes on and lead to unlockable skins for different time periods. The energy bar has returned, you can perform breakers, enhance your specials and crush your enemies insides with the awesome X-ray attacks.

There will be environmental weaponry, similar to injustice: gods among us, where the player can grab items from the stage to smash it over their opponent and the arenas will be more interactive. The characters can run up walls to do air combos or avoid attacks.

There has been some speculation of brutalities returning to the game. These were the ultra long, Tekken style combos that lead to cool finishers. They weren't well liked from the previous installments because of their difficulty to complete, so if they are in the game I would like to see what NetherRealm does to make them more user friendly.

They're also bringing back the multiple fighting styles of MK Deception. This isn't an exact copy from Deception, you won't be able to switch out fighting styles during the fight. This brings more depth to each character having every style stronger in different areas. The move set isn't completely different but focuses on core character traits like movement or projectiles, which will determine whether you fight up close or keep your distance, giving the user an opportunity to fine tune their play. It will take some time for each persons to find their preferred play style but this is the increase in quality that NetherRealm it offering in the next installment of the franchise.i

The newest game mechanic is the addition of "Factions". When you begin the game you will choose a faction which you will be sided with when you play online. The team at NetherRealms said that each week there will be a war between factions which you can compete in for points. Everything you do can add points to your faction, from playing story mode to defeating rivals. This will lead to unique unlockables specific to your faction like secret fatalities and winning the faction war. There is five factions in the game: The Black Dragon, Brother Hood of Shadow, Lin Kuei, Special Forces and White Lotus.

With all the advancements it looks like Mortal Kombat X is going to have all the skull crushing, spine splitting, genital jabbing fans have come to love with a load of new gameplay elements to make this must see for the future. I can't wait to see how this game develops, in the meantime if you need to get a fights fix check out WWE Immortals, on mobile, made by NetherRealm studios.

Mortal Kombat X is due for release April 14 on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC.
