Unsafe Sext: The “I Saw Your Willy” Campaign

by January 14, 2015 0 comments

In an attempt to prevent children from sending one another naked pictures with their phones, a British charity have released a bizarre and somewhat shocking animated short called I Saw Your Willy.

When I was a kid we didn’t have cell phones. If you wanted to sexually harass someone, you had to do it in person.

The short video is centred around a young boy named Alex, who one day, while goofing around on what is assumedly Snapchat, sends a picture of his penis to a female classmate. Surprisingly, the classmate isn’t horrified, but instead she thinks it’s funny¬†and sends the image to the rest of the class. The image gets around quickly, and eventually everyone points out that they’ve all seen Alex’s willy. The video, never covers the actual sexual nature of the act, nor does it mention sexual harassment. It does however address sexuality, but in the form of pedophilia. Focusing more on the social dangers and repercussions -including a bully who mocks Alex, just for having a penis:

I found the video really strange, more than anything. It seems to be misusing the term “sext” as Alex’s behavior, although impulsive, and innapropriate, was an innocent childhood mistake.

That is, in the age of technology.

I felt that the video, did some damage to its own cause, by not being entirely honest about the real issue with sending nude or sexual imagery to unwilling, and especially underage recipients. Watch the video for yourself here:
