Could Sites Like CyberPot Be Next? Police Probe Cannabis YouTube Channel

by February 1, 2015 0 comments

A YouTube channel based out of Scotland is under scrutiny by both the website and Scottish police, who are concerned with cannabis being labeled as “harmless.” Their main concern is the accessibility of the videos found on the YouTube channel, specifically regarding children. The videos contain footage of a man smoking what he calls “asparagus” (the videos all are captioned stating that any plants smoked are asparagus) and also growing tips. There’s even footage of plants grown in an inside tent. Though YouTube states the individual didn’t break any of the site’s rules, the police are investigating if the individual (and his guests, who’ve all been disguised behind masks and the like) has broken any actual laws.

Come on! It’s just edutainment…uh…I mean, we’re a cooking website! CyberPot is like…pots and pans.

The individual on the site, sometimes mocks police, which can’t help his case. He’s smoked “asparagus” on film wearing a joke police hat. “Both the police and the platform – in this case, YouTube – have a responsibility to deal with this kind of thing strongly.” A police spokesperson said.

YouTube responded by saying, “YouTube staff review flagged videos 24 hours a day, seven days a week to determine whether they violate our Community Guidelines. When they do, we remove them. Sometimes a video doesn’t violate our Community Guidelines, but may not be appropriate for everyone. These videos may be age-restricted.” That is a pretty sober-minded response, especially when one considers growing acceptance of marijuana as not only a recreational or leisurely activity but also as medicine. These attitudes include more leniency towards cultivation of the plant as well as paraphernalia.

What it seems to come down to is that the authorities are going to have to accept the inevitability that the easiest thing to bust people for is no longer a problem. In fact, it’s mostly been a solution. With movements like Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (in the United States), it’s every patient’s and every pothead’s hope that we can all finally take a deep breath, and just relax.
