Marijuana Seeds Held In Doomsday Vault

by February 27, 2015 0 comments

You ever been in the apocalypse? You ever been in the apocalypse on weeeeed?

Now you can run away from zombies, cannibals or nuclear blasts while still enjoying some good herb. On a remote Norweigan island, there is a massive vault that is in place in order preserve important plants (used for food and medicine), by storing seeds. A majority of the seeds in the vault are marijuana, more so than blueberry, raspberry or asparagus seeds (weird examples, I know). The marijuana seeds come from 17 different countries, including North Korea, but not including The United States.

What’s up with that?

The Norweigan government owns and operates the vault, called the Svalbard vault, with assistance from the Nordic Genetic Research Center and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-funded Global Crop Diversity Trust. However, the seeds themselves are still owned by the gene banks that donated them.

The vault is about 800-miles from the North Pole, and it is built in such a way, that even following a power-failure, the seeds would still be kept cold enough to be protected.

Could you imagine a movie in which survivors journey to the North Pole to get some herb? I’d watch it.

The bunker is so well built, that it could survive almost anything. The height above sea level ensures the seeds stay warm, and it’s far from where it may be affected by earthquakes or volcanoes.

While it’s all cool that there’s a doomsday vault for these seeds, the main intent of the building is to use it as a modern day backup for gene banks.

Anyway, here’s a video promoting the facility. This place is pretty cool, regardless of its lofty goals, it reminds me of a Gattaca-sequel or something.

What do you think about it?
