Hemp Day: Tennessee Farmers Needed To Grow Hemp

by February 11, 2015 0 comments

Tennessee is calling upon its farmers to grow hemp. Hemp, which is of the cannabis family, is not the same plant as marijuana. However, federal law doesn’t give a fuck about what science thinks, or at least it’s been that way for¬†nearly the last century. Finally, the plant that is useful to produce anything from fuel to textiles, food and even plastics (among numerous other things) is getting its hay day (pretty good pun, right?). Hemp, which is what the declaration of independence is written on, was once one of America’s major industries. It may be that way again soon.

The state’s Department of Agriculture put out applications for growing the plant. While they’ve had non-stop questions about the move, they have yet to find anybody willing to take on the challenge. One key issue is that in order to grow the plant, which looks like its cousin, farmers would have to report the crop to the DEA so as not to be confused with growing marijuana. Marijuana is still illegal federally though some states have legalized it for medicinal and recreational purposes. Hemp can’t get you high. However, the government still doesn’t acknowledge that, and to even purchase seeds, one needs to receive a permit, and that’s always a pain. Plus hemp plants are enormous, the benefit is that the plant is a major cash crop. Some farmers in Kentucky are growing the plant, and it’s going well.

Hopefully, Tennessee will see a positive response to this great opportunity for the community as well as the rest of the country. It’s all about removing the stigma. I think we’ll see a transformation soon enough. Cannabis plants will soon be like the “ugly girl” in 1990s teen comedies, we’ll question why we ever ignored her.
