Alaska Legalizes Pot and a Win For D.C.

On Tuesday, Alaska made smoking, growing and owning small amounts of marijuana legal. The state is the third to decriminalise recreational use of ganja. Buying and selling, as well as smoking in public, are still not legal, and the state won’t see shops open until next year. Luckily,¬†unlike in Washington State, it is not an offence to exchange weed without any money being received (like passing someone a joint or feeding them a brownie, or “hookin’ a brother up with a little nug”). What else is surprising is that Alaska is a predominantly Republican state. According to, the law was just barely passed. However, it shows an evolution on the part of United States and its legal landscape. Another example would be that this week Washington D.C., after a long legal scuffle, finally decriminalized possession of marijuana, but they’re not at the retail level yet either.

According to the new Alaskan law, anyone 21-years or older can possess up to an ounce of marijuana and can grow up to six marijuana plants, but only three can be flowering at one time. The move was made as an agreement with Alaskan attitudes towards personal freedoms, somewhat reflective of Libertarian ideals. The state is also hopeful that the move will generate jobs, income and boost the economy.

Well, it worked for Colorado, and things are looking good in Washington. Next up are Vermont and Oregon, and from there on…the rest of the country?

Here’s hoping.
