Metal Gear Solid V Will Be Kojima’s Last

This morning IGN interviewed Konami’s Hideo Kojima about the soon-to-release Metal Gear Solid 5. In this interview, he said, “Even if the Metal Gear franchise continues, this will be my last Metal Gear.” He stated, “The games I’ve personally designed and produced Metal Gear MSX, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid 1-4, Peace Walker and now Metal Gear Solid 5 Constitute a Saga. With MGS 5, I’m finally closing the loop on that saga.”

Now Kojima has said this before but has been attempting to leave the series with the design team since MGS 2. Due to problems with the previous installments, Konami has always managed to keep Kojima on board, but apparently this will be the last time. Now will this be the last Metal Gear game we ever see? I doubt it. I believe Kojima’s informing the public that his contribution is over. He wants people to remember his definitive era of Metal Gear, so people know what his vision was for the franchise. It’s like when Conan O’Brian stopped writing for the Simpsons; the show continued, but it was the end of a legacy. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe Kojima will step out for one or two installments only to have a triumphant return. To be honest, I would like to see him leave the series, he’s an amazing game designer and I would like to see what he would realize with a new IP.

They also discussed how the story will be affected with Metal Gear Solid Five being open world. Kojima had this to say “The biggest challenge was how to tell a story in a non-linear way, and our solution was to use a freely assembled episodic format. Like a TV drama, the story gradually comes together, and player proceeds through missions and gathers episodic pieces of the story.”
It’s going to be interesting to see how a story driven game can be broken up into separate sections. It could generate plenty of different outcomes, giving the user a chance to replay sections in a different order to experience alternative endings.

Finally, when asked if he had any comments for fans, Hideo Kojima said, “We’re putting everything we have to redefine the concept of strategic freedom in open world gaming. I can’t wait for fans to experience what I think will be the most interesting game in the franchise”. This Metal Gear should be different than all the other installments with it being the first to have such a vast environment to explore and a non-linear story. I think this will be a must-play for not only fans of the series, but people who appreciate gaming history. This game is 27 years in the making, and if this truly is Kojima’s last run on the series, I doubt he’s going to leave fans wanting more.

Metal Gear Solid 5  is scheduled to release on all consoles September 1st and be available on Steam September 15th.
